# Lockbox vs smart lock for Airbnb: prices, code rotation and when to send the door code

A Master Lock lockbox costs about $42 or €44; a smart lock with a keypad costs $280 to $330 in the US and about €300 to €510 in Europe. Prices checked 26 September 2026, a decision table, and when to send the code.

A lockbox costs about $42 or €44 (Master Lock 5401, 26 September 2026); a smart lock with a keypad costs $280 to $330 in the US and about €300 to €510 in Europe. The difference is the code: a lockbox has one code you change by hand, a smart lock gives each booking a code that expires at checkout.

Below: the two side by side, current prices for specific models, what Booking.com and Airbnb say about changing codes, a send schedule for the code, and a decision table for your unit.

## What is the difference between a lockbox and a smart lock?

A lockbox is a small metal safe on the wall with the key inside and a mechanical combination. A smart lock replaces or drives your deadbolt, has a keypad outside, and an app that creates and deletes codes.

| | Lockbox | Smart lock with keypad |
|---|---|---|
| Price | about $42 or €44 for a Master Lock 5401 | $280 to $330 in the US, about €300 to €510 in Europe |
| Code | one, set by hand at the door | one per booking, with a start and end time |
| Change the code remotely | no | yes, over Wi-Fi (built in or through a bridge) |
| Know who came in and when | no | yes, the app keeps a log |
| Power | none | batteries or a rechargeable pack, 3 to 8 months by the makers' own figures |
| Guest loses the key | cut a new key, and past guests still know the box code | delete the code, the physical key stays with you |
| What fails | rarely anything | the battery or the Wi-Fi; you need a backup code or a spare key nearby |

## What does a lockbox cost?

The Master Lock 5401 is the model most hosts end up with: a wall-mounted box with a four-digit combination you set yourself.

| Model | Shop | Price, 26 September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Master Lock 5401D | Master Lock, US | $42.13 |
| Master Lock 5401EURD | Master Lock EU shop | €43.90 |
| Master Lock 5401EURD | Biuromarket, Poland | 160.15 zł (was 216.54 zł) |

The EU version has an inner space of 9.1 x 6.3 x 3 cm, enough for a few keys and a garage remote. In Poland, where we checked more retailers, key boxes ran from 51 zł for a no-name box at Castorama to 229 zł for a Burg-Wächter Key Safe 40 SB. We could not see an Amazon UK price for the 5401EURD, so there is no pound figure here.

## What does a smart lock with a keypad cost?

Prices from the manufacturers' own shops on 26 September 2026. The first three can connect to Airbnb directly, but only for listings in the US and Canada.

| Setup | Price | Codes limited to the stay | Battery, per the maker |
|---|---|---|---|
| August Wi-Fi Smart Lock + Yale Keypad Touch | $199.99 + $119.99 = $319.98 | through Airbnb's direct connection (US and Canada) | 2 x CR123, up to 3 months |
| Yale Assure Lock 2 Key-Free Keypad with Wi-Fi | $279.99, keypad built in | through Airbnb's direct connection (US and Canada) | 4 x AA, no life figure on the page |
| Schlage Encode Plus | from $329, keypad and Wi-Fi built in | through Airbnb's direct connection; Schlage says you control "who has access and when" | not stated on the product page |
| Nuki Smart Lock Ultra + Keypad 2 | €349 + €159 = €508; in the UK the Home Set Ultra is £399 (was £454) | yes: one-time or time-limited PIN, up to 200 codes | rechargeable, 2-hour charge, "months" per charge; keypad at least 12 months on 4 x AAA |
| tedee GO2 + Keypad PRO | €169 + €129 = €298, plus the Bridge for remote access | yes: the PIN works only during the reservation and expires at the checkout date and time | 3 x CR123A, up to 6 to 8 months |

Two things to know before buying. First, Airbnb's direct smart lock connection works only for listings in the US and Canada, with compatible Schlage, August and Yale models that have a keypad and Wi-Fi. Outside those countries a Nuki or tedee does the same job, but the code comes from the lock's app or your PMS and you send it in a message. Second, the tedee GO2 needs its Bridge for remote control and live activity logs; Nuki's Ultra and Yale's Assure Lock 2 have Wi-Fi built in.

## Why is a fixed code a risk, and when should you change it?

A code that never changes is known, after a year, to every past guest, their friends and anyone they forwarded the message to. Booking.com's guidelines for room key access (16 July 2024) are direct about it: only authorised staff and registered guests should have access, lockbox and entry codes should be changed after each check-out, and with an app-based smart lock you generate a new code after every check-out. The ID checks in the same document are "minimum expectations", and Booking warns that partners who cannot meet them may be suspended or removed; code rotation sits in the recommended protocols.

Airbnb treats the code as belonging to the booking, not the flat. With a connected lock every booking gets its own four-digit code, active only from check-in time and expired after checkout. Everyone the guest adds to the reservation gets the same code; if the guest removes someone, the remaining travellers may receive a new one. Airbnb's hosting guidance of 31 August 2026 puts it in one line: give each booking guest a unique access code. The guest ground rules add that guests must respect the approved number of guests and ask about visitors, and a smart lock's log shows you whether they do.

The rule that works: change the code at least after every checkout, and better still, give it an expiry. With a lockbox, the cleaner changes it after the guest leaves and writes the new code on the turnover checklist you copy it from. With a smart lock you set the code to run from check-in to checkout and do nothing else. You usually cannot change the building's gate or intercom code, which is one more reason to change the one you can.

## How do you send the code safely and on time?

1. **Never in the listing or any public field.** The code goes in the booking thread on Booking.com or Airbnb, or on WhatsApp if the guest has given you a number. Booking.com lets you message a guest from booking until seven days after checkout.
2. **Fixed code: the day before arrival.** The shorter the code travels before the stay, the fewer people see it. Send it again on arrival morning in three lines.
3. **Stay-limited code: earlier is fine.** It opens nothing before check-in time. Airbnb's connected locks send it at confirmation and remind the guest 8 days and 2 days before check-in and on check-in day.
4. **A photo and one sentence on the mechanism.** "Slide the cover down, set the dials, pull the latch." Every lockbox opens slightly differently.
5. **Plan B in the same message.** A spare key with a neighbour, a second code, a phone that answers. Airbnb's connected locks send a backup code when the lock is offline; with your own lock, you arrange the backup.
6. **After checkout, change and confirm.** The cleaner changes the lockbox code and texts you "new code 3382"; with a smart lock you check the log to see the guest's code has expired.

The message, ready to paste:

```
Hi {first name}, see you tomorrow at 12 Example Street, Flat 5, 3rd floor. Gate: press 5 and # on the intercom, code 2580#. The lockbox is on the left of the flat door at handle height (photo below). Code: 4471. Slide the cover down, set the dials, pull the latch, and scramble the dials after taking the keys. Check-in from 3 pm. If anything does not work: +44 7700 900000, any hour.
```

The same schedule for both setups:

| When | Lockbox, fixed code | Smart lock, code per booking |
|---|---|---|
| After booking | check-in times and a request for arrival time, no code | the same; the code can go now, since it only works from check-in |
| 3 days before | full instructions without the code | full instructions with the code |
| The day before | the code, a photo of the lockbox, plan B | a code reminder and a photo of the keypad |
| Arrival morning | address, code and phone in three lines | the same |
| After checkout | the cleaner changes the code and confirms | the code expires by itself; glance at the log |

## Which one should you choose?

| Your situation | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One unit, a few turnovers a month, you live nearby | lockbox | about $42 or €44, the code changes at cleaning |
| Unit two hours away, cleaned by a company | smart lock with built-in Wi-Fi or a bridge | codes set remotely, a log of entries, nobody has to remember to spin the dials |
| Several units in one building | a smart lock per door, one lockbox as backup | one app, stay-limited codes, one log |
| US or Canada listing, mostly Airbnb | a lock Airbnb connects to directly (August, Yale, Schlage) | Airbnb creates and sends a unique code per booking by itself |
| UK or EU listing | Nuki or tedee with a keypad | stay-limited PINs from the app, sent by you or your PMS |
| Budget under $50 or €50 | Master Lock 5401 | metal box, four-digit code you set yourself |

A lockbox holds up longer than people expect, on one condition: someone physically changes the code after every guest. When you cannot guarantee that, a $280 to $330 lock costs less than one bad review, because the code expires without anyone having to remember.

## Where Supalobby fits

Supalobby is an AI agent and one inbox for messages from Booking.com, Airbnb, WhatsApp, Instagram, e-mail, Slowhop and Aloha Camp. You put the entry instructions and how the lockbox opens into the property's knowledge base, and the agent answers guests from it on every channel, in their language. On Booking.com and WhatsApp it replies on its own; on Airbnb it prepares the reply for you to send with one click. When the property is connected to Beddesk, the agent reads the door PIN stored with the reservation. Sending codes at a set time before arrival is the job of Playbooks in the Operator plan, which is announced and not yet available. Supalobby does not connect to locks: the code comes from the lock's app or your PMS. Autopilot is 49 zł net per unit per month, roughly 11 euro.

If you already have a lockbox and nobody changes its code, start there tomorrow. It is the cheapest security upgrade in this piece: free.

## Frequently asked questions

**How much does a lockbox for an Airbnb cost?**

On 26 September 2026 the Master Lock 5401D wall-mount lock box was $42.13 on Master Lock's US site, and the European 5401EURD was €43.90 in Master Lock's EU shop. Both use a four-digit combination you set yourself. In Poland, where we checked more shops, key boxes ranged from 51 zł to 229 zł.

**How often should I change the lockbox code?**

After every check-out. Booking.com's room key access guidelines of 16 July 2024 say lockbox and entry codes should be changed after each check-out, and Airbnb's hosting guidance says to give each booking guest a unique access code. With a lockbox, the cleaner changes it after the guest leaves; with a smart lock, the code expires on its own.

**Will Airbnb send my guests a code from my smart lock automatically?**

Only in the US and Canada. There Airbnb connects directly to compatible Schlage, August and Yale locks with a keypad and Wi-Fi, gives every booking a unique four-digit code active from check-in to checkout, and sends it on confirmation, 8 and 2 days before arrival and on the day. Elsewhere you generate the code in the lock's app and send it yourself.

**What happens to a smart lock when the Wi-Fi goes down?**

It depends on the lock. The tedee GO2 needs its Bridge for remote control and live activity logs, while the Nuki Smart Lock Ultra and Yale Assure Lock 2 have Wi-Fi built in, so remote code changes depend on the router. Airbnb's connected locks send the guest a backup code when the lock is offline. Whatever you use, put a plan B in the message: a spare key or a second code.

**When should I send the door code?**

A fixed lockbox code: the day before arrival, again on arrival morning, never in the listing. A code that is only valid for the stay can go out earlier, because it does not open anything before check-in time. Airbnb's own connected-lock flow sends it at booking confirmation and repeats it 8 days and 2 days before check-in and on check-in day.
